Wendell Scott – Success Against All Odds Wendell Scott is the only African-American driver to have ever won a NASCAR® race. On December 1, 1963 at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Fla., Scott edged Buck Baker for the win in a historic finish that is still celebrated today. But that barrier-breaking victory wasn’t the only measure of Scott’s success. Scott won 128 races on various circuits before moving to the NASCAR® premier series. Once he joined the country’s best racers, Scott still was able to consistently finish in the top 10 in the standings despite having to run hand-me-down equipment.
